In a recent survey from insurer Zurich’s SME Index more than three quarters of small companies consider having a good online reputation as important to their business, but two fifths never check online reviews of their company!

Around 15 per cent of small and medium-sized companies have already experienced some form of negative comment online, whether that be poor reviews, malicious content from competitors or negative media coverage, according to the same report. Additionally, more than one in five (21 per cent) of SME decisionmakers say that their business has been contacted online by someone who they thought was trying to scam the company.

Richard Coleman, managing director of Zurich’s commercial broker business says, ‘Online reputation is an increasing worry for SMEs, many of whom are only just getting to grips with managing a social media presence and a website, let alone the effects of negative content posted about their company.

‘In a world where the consumer is increasingly guided by what they can easily find out online – think about review sites such as Tripadvisor and Trustatrader – SMEs need to get to grips with their own online presence and how to manage it.’

More importantly you see it from your customers perspective 81% of consumers will conduct online research before purchasing – but 39% of SMEs don’t check their social media presence.

  3. One of the very best ways to protect and achieve good online reputation management manage is to post a lot of good, interesting and useful content. Aim to deliver content that is aligned with you business or industry or the interests of you customers or potential clients. Good content will start to fill out your presence in the search results allowing you to dominate with you own messages.
  4. Amplify your voice by sharing your content on social platforms. Good interesting content gets attention and distribution. Have a presence on all major channels and make sure your profile is 100% complete. Monitor your social accounts and respond to what is being said.
